Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) 2012 - 2013 Holiday Schedule

In July 2006, the Sydney Futures Exchange and the Australian Stock Exchange merged, creating what’s now one of the top ten stock exchanges in the world in terms of market capitalization, the Australian Securities Exchange.

Normal trading hours for the Australian Securities Exchange run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Syndey Time). Yet there are certain days the exchange may close early or won’t be open for trading at all.

In fact, there are eight days total the Australian Securities Exchange will be closed entirely. Also, on the last business day before Christmas Day (December 24th, 2012) and the last business day of the year (December 31, 2012), the exchange will close early at 2:10 PM.

In the morning, pre-market trading is open from 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM. But unlike the New York Stock Exchange, at the opening bell, the Australian Securities Exchange still isn’t entirely open for business.

Between 4:00 PM and 4:10 PM, the market pre-opens for its Closing Single Price Auction. This is when brokers can enter, change, and cancel orders in preparation for the market closing.

From 4:10 PM to 4:12 PM, the exchange calculates closing prices on its securities. And from 4:12 until 6:50, brokers may cancel, amend, or make overnight trades (but only via phone).

After 6:50 PM, the exchange is closed for system maintenance and updates and doesn’t open back up again until 7:00 AM the next trading day.

The Australian Securities Exchange is operated and managed by ASX Limited (ASX: ASX).

ASX Limited functions as more than just an exchange. It also operates as a clearing house, payments system facilitator and oversees compliance of its own operating rules.
