January Effect

Definition: Tending to rise between December 31st and the end of the first week in January, investors in the stock market may choose to sell some of their portfolio before the end of the year, claiming losses for tax purposes. Though it is very tricky to profit from this type of selling because the market usually anticipates this and regulates accordingly at this time of year.
