The reason most people diversify is because they don't study their stocks and they want some protection in case they are wrong. That is a terrible way to invest. You should not be investing in a stock unless you are 100% sure it is going to go the way you predict. If you have any doubts, you should pass on the stock. There are other ways to protect from losses that don't require diversification.

Just A Quick Footnote:

My mom can not correlate her thinking, when it comnes to her stock market holdings, because she doesn't understand that, while her stock portfolio was increasing last year when the market exceeded 14,000, the purchasing power of the $$'s in her portfolia were headed south pluss capitol gains taxes on those depreciated $ profits. When she was asked if she understood shorting the market and would she discuss that with her brokerage company, she fumed that her broker wasn't permited to do anything until she directed him to do it. Well, we know the rest of her story don't we folks and my best option finally became to go back home & let mom do her thing. Whatever has happened to communiction these days? I don't dare open up a discussion with mom, because she knows that the market will make a complete comeback and head higher "over the long haul" but mom is 83. How many years is "the long haul" from here?
