Achieving Financial Literacy How To Get A “Free Ride” to a Lifetime of Wealth
by Alex Williams, Managing Editor, Investment U

Is Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke taking his cue from us here at Investment U? It appears so.

On March 30th, Investment U Chairman Alexander Green wrote, “It’s a shame, really, that much of what is offered here - at no charge - is not taught in the public schools. Why is it that you can graduate in the top of your high school class and know next to nothing about credit card debt, adjustable-rate mortgages, or 401(k)s?”

Last Wednesday, in an address to students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Kansas City, Bernanke picked up the baton. He remarked that an explosion of financial products means that people must achieve financial literacy.

“As you think about your future,” Bernanke told the graduating students, “don’t forget the importance of financial literacy.”

Apparently, he has good reason for concern.

An Epidemic of Financial Illiteracy

In a nationwide survey last year by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, high school seniors answered just 52% of the personal finance and economics questions correctly.

The dismal results underscore the need for students to improve their financial know-how. But the thing is, it’s not just high school seniors that need help…

The marketplace is getting more complex by the week, as dozens of new instruments and products become available to retail investors. It can be a confusing environment, to say the least.

Our mission here, of course, is to explain your options and uncover opportunities
