And why do people live above their means and run up credit cards? It's because they don't earn enough money to pay for what they need. If salaries have remained stagnant for a decade, but the cost of everything has risen, then you will not have enough money to pay for all the basics plus some discretionary spending.

By the time I'm done paying all my bills, I will not have enough left to pay for car repairs, extra medical care, the leaking roof, and good seasonal produce. I have cut back on everything. I buy nothing new except underwear. The last time I ate out was six months ago at a Chinese buffet for $7.

I don't need idiots like you to lecture me. You have no idea how the lower economic classes live. You're probably one of those rightwingers who thinks unemployment insurance is so wonderful that people would rather sit home and collect 25% of what they used to earn instead of finding another job. You do know that there are no jobs, don't you?

Most "Western" democracies, including the world's largest debtor, the USA, don't manufacture anything of significance for the world, other than brain power. Wages are too high, as is compensation for executives and entertainers -athletes, musicians, and film and TV stars.

It all adds up to..... WE CANNOT COMPETE as so much is being paid to those who don't produce anything!

Citizens would revolt if a qualified trade - electrician, plumber, and others - wanted $200 an hour but they gladly pay "$xxx" to watch an athlete who,at a paltry $5 million a year earns $570 / hour, even when asleep! Most politicians are whores, so they aren't much help.

It's time to forget about who's the biggest and has the most, and concentrate on being the best at whatever we do. From Walt Kelly's cartoon character, Pogo(1948-1975): "We have seen the enemy and it is us."

I see the current economic situation and looming complete economic colapse as result of (for at least 2 decades) American's living above their means due to the constant supply of credit. American's have become like spoilt children that the government is now bound to keep spoiling so that there won't be a revolt or civil war at the worst. As with all situations that don't balance, eventually the imbalance becomes so great that no measures on earth can prevent a forced correction. We're only just beginning to see that starting to happen. It's only going to get worse until (starting with the government) everybody from the top of society financial ladder to the bottom accepts living in a cash situation (ie, not relying on anybody else's money to prop up an unrealistic lifestyle). Only then can the great nation of the USA begin to re-build their economic machine. The question is: Who is willing for those measures and hardship in their daily lives? Take a little hardship now, or have it forced upon you in a more deastic measure when the forced correction happens!

New York City gave billions in incentives to the New York Yankees to build their huge stadium, add a huge parking and shopping mall facility, reduce public parkland and common areas near the river, and the Yankees are rich, rich, rich! Why? They offered to create jobs, of course, but not union-level or middle-class jobs and who knows how many more they added than the old Stadium generated? This corporate welfare just makes my blood boil!
