Stock and Investment Resources: What I Rely On Every Day
By Dr. Steve Sjuggerud, Advisory Panelist, Investment U

“So how do you do it?” I’m often asked…

Readers of my newsletter have made money every year since it was launched in 2001, in what has been a generally bad time to own stocks. Like there’s a secret

The reality is, I simply do my homework, every day. There are certain people I rely on and things I do every day to stay on top of it all Today I’ll share my daily stock and investment resources what I do, and who I rely on.

The great thing is, all the resources I mention below can be tried out for free, or next to free (like $1 for a copy of a newspaper).

Let’s get started

My Daily Investment Schedule

First thing in the morning, I get informed. I get the bland news out of the way first I either check out CNBC (on XM Radio in my car or working out – it’s the same as the TV) or the Wall Street Journal, also in my car or working out

I don’t know if you know it but the Wall Street Journal is available in audio format daily by 6:30 a.m. from http://www.audible.com. Don’t get too excited: it’s a pretty boring version, and you need to be able to use an MP3 player, but it’s a way to use my time wisely.

Then in the office I’ll get to the good stuff one of my favorite stock and investment resources is Dennis Gartman’s daily letter (dennis@theGartmanLetter.com). This letter is expensive, but it’s commentary you generally won’t find anywhere. Dennis generally offers a few weeks free trial. I really like the Financial Times too – the peach newspaper.

Next in my investment schedule is checking in on the markets. Yahoo! Finance is great for a quick look at most things. For gold I’ll check in at http://www.kitco.com. For ETFs and closed-end funds, http://www.etfconnect.com is a nice resource.

For any deeper number crunching, like having stock prices or other stock data appear in Micosoft Excel, I use XLQ for a lot of my work (http://www.qmatix.com). It is a gem of a program. It is very inexpensive, and it saves me a ton of time. XLQCompanion is how I track trailing stops now, so I’ll open that little program up and check in there, too. (XLQ and XLQCompanion are inexpensive Try the free trial at http://www.qmatix.com.) Life would be more difficult without it.

I just got off the phone with my Dad, Dave Sjuggerud, who’s my trustworthy inside-Wall Street contact. My dad focuses on international bonds in particular, and international stocks as well. He has access to stuff I don’t. Today he gave me an update on Australia raising interest rates, and Iceland’s rates going up, too. (If you’re looking for a trustworthy advisor who can recommend some safe ways to generate high income, give my Dad a call at 407.539.1004 or send him an e-mail at dsjuggerud@lasallest.com. He’s a good guy. You’ll like him.)

Stock and Investment Resources for Commodities and Coins

When I have commodity questions that I can’t answer, I rely on commodities broker Chris Foster. If you’re Canadian (or any other nationality other than American) you ought to do business with Chris (chris_foster@scotiacapital.com). Chris called $50 oil before anyone – and it’s in print, in my newsletter, when he called it. For a while there, I was phoning him every day. I talked to Chris today, and he likes unleaded gas, for a variety of reasons too numerous to list here.

I’ve also been talking coins lately, and there are some excellent investment resources out there today in that market. Today alone, I’ve talked to Burt Blumert (burtblumert@comcast.net) who specializes in raw gold, Van Simmons (van@davidhall.com) who specializes in the nicest U.S. coins available, and Dana Samuelson (dana@amergold.com), who specializes somewhere in between. I’m grateful to have these guys as three of my four recommended coin dealers

Well, there you have a few things I did and a few people I talked to in my investment schedule today. You don’t need to talk to all these folks or read all those things in one day, of course. But you ought to get to know all of these people, and try out all of these services, at some time. The sooner the better.

Good investing,

Steve
