Dennis Gartman has had a great year in his daily investment newsletter

As I mentioned earlier this week, he’s nailed the twists and turns in the markets this year, most notably having been exceptionally bullish on gold for most of this year, and then selling it a week before it crashed.

Earlier in the week, we learned Dennis Gartman’s Rules of Trading.

Today, we’ll learn how he does what he does what the editor of the Gartman Letter reads every day, plus what to read to become a great investor

What Dennis Gartman Reads Every Day

First on his list is the Financial Times (http://www.ft.com)-the peach-colored newspaper out of London. I’ll second that-it is the world’s best paper in my book. Additionally, Dennis also reads the Investor’s Business Daily (http://www.investors.com), the Wall Street Journal (http://www.wsj.com), the International Herald Tribune (http://www.iht.com), and the English language version of a German newspaper, at http://www.faz.net.

Dennis also reads China’s People’s Daily, http://english.peopledaily.com.cn. It’s a lot of reading but how else can you write a four-page daily investment letter?

Over the weeks, Dennis says he reads many magazines and investment newsletters. The Economist (http://www.economist.com) and The Far Eastern Economic Review (http://www.feer.com) are excellent magazines. As for newsletters, Dennis likes the letters by Marc Faber (http://www.gloomboomdoom.com), Jim Grant (http://www.grantspub.com), and Gary Shilling (http://www.agaryshilling.com). Dennis and Gary talk a few times a week.

Books to Read to Make You a Better Investor

The books at the top of Dennis Gartman’s list to make you a better investor are true classics: Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre and the first two Market Wizards books by Jack Schwager. “Read ‘em and read ‘em again,” he says. I’ll second that.

Dennis mentioned many other books, but I think this reading list should keep you busy for a while.

After we were done talking books, I said, “Dennis these are all well and good but where do you get that inside stuff you report on where it seems like you’re a mole in the oil ministry of some African government?”

“Believe it or not, much of that information actually comes from existing subscribers who send me quick e-mails.”

You will be exceptionally educated about what’s going on in the investment world if you read these publications.

I personally believe that very few professional investors even read these things as often as they should. If you can commit to increasing your reading of some of this stuff (it’s all good stuff!), then you will no doubt become a better investor – better than most pros, I believe.

I always find it interesting to find out what the best in the business are reading to stay informed and get a leg up. Not surprisingly, it usually comes down to the list above the best sources out there for informed news.
